AudioSpaces is a project that explores the potential of recording and listening to audio pinned to a map.

With our app, we hope to facilitate the power of audio to store and revisit memories, allowing us to share and return to the events that matter to us—exactly where they happened. It works with geolocation, which means the recordings you upload can only be fully listened to in the places they've been pinned.

We’re running a survey at the moment, and would love to get your opinions.

You can download the app for free here (iPhone only for now):

What’s a Substack?

The easiest way to keep updated with how AudioSpaces is developing. Plus, this is where we’ll share our thoughts and ideas behind the project.

Our starting point with the newsletter is that memories often have a strong connection to the places in which they’re formed. Sound—especially in its form as recorded audio—only intensifies this connection. But why exactly?

Then, throw in the layers of culture, technology, ecology and politics that shape the ways we listen to, record and make sound. By exploring these social forces, we may also reveal things about how memory works, and about how we inhabit space in these uncertain times.

We explore all this and more right here, as a written supplement to everything that goes on in the AudioSpaces app.

Recording audio doesn’t have to be limited to musicians and acousticians, and thinking deeply about sound can be for everyone too. That’s why this newsletter is always written with the non-expert in mind.

Subscribe for updates

Have a wander through the different sections of the site, but also Substack works like a newsletter: by subscribing, what we publish goes directly to your email inbox. There’s no need to make an account if you don’t want to, and subscribing is completely free.

We aim to publish on a regular basis. At the same time, we know everyone already has too many emails to read, so we promise only to publish quality, interesting and concise writing. We’re not here to post “content”.

You can also follow us on Instagram and TikTok.
